This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?
The disciples said this in response to Jesus's teaching: Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.
God's Word can feel very hard to our fleshly sensibilities.
Many of His disciples turned back that day and no longer walked with Him. Have you come across a Word of His that you turned from? Maybe you didn't openly walk away, but did you reject that one part of His truth?
Jesus asked His Twelve if they wanted to leave as well. Here, Simon Peter gives the answer we all need to learn, Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life... You are the Holy One of God.
God's Word contains the words of eternal life. There is no other way to live.
I sometimes wonder if there are those who've rejected a part of His teaching, still believe they are following Him, but are only deceiving themselves. Can we really follow Him and reject His teaching?
Consider for yourself a Word you've heard from Him that seems hard. How do you respond? Do you walk away from it? Or do you know it's the only way, the words of eternal life, because of who He is?
Father God, at times, Your Word seems hard to my corrupt flesh.
Remind me that my understanding is perverted, my flesh-driven sensibilities
get in the way of Your Truth. I want to be as sure as Peter, there is no other way,
You alone have the words of life.
