The Challenge -- Day 137

Today's Scripture: John 4:1-23
[Click the reference above to read online.]

It's Independence Day and we see Jesus offering freedom to a Samaritan woman at Jacob's well. He offers her freedom from thirst and freedom in worship.

When Jesus made the audacious offer, the woman asked Him if He was greater than Jacob. Yes, He is. He's the one who wrestled with Jacob. Gave him a permanent limp. Changed his name from Jacob the Cheater to Israel the God-wrestler. She's talking with the One who freed up Jacob to become the father of God's chosen people (Genesis 32:24-31; Genesis 35:9-11).

In Jesus, we see God making the way for freedom for all people from sin and death.

"... The water that I will give him will become in him
a spring of water welling up to eternal life."

Freedom from the thirst the things of the world fail to quench.
Freedom from tradition, religion, and rules.
Freedom to worship God in spirit and in truth.
Freedom to wrestle with God face to face.
Freedom from fear of sin and death.

Today, before you celebrate the independence of our country, celebrate the greatest freedom you have through your dependence on Jesus Christ.

Know God as the One who sets you free.

Jesus, thank You for the way of freedom You provided.
Grow me to fully walk in Your gift of grace and peace:
fully satisfied, fully free to worship You in spirit and truth.

For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore,
and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.
Galatians 5:1 ESV
